In this excellent and heartbreaking post, Allan Hoffman, a retired senior official with the U.S. Department of Energy, publishes the executive summary of the 1978 Domestic Policy Review that recommended a strategy for accelerating solar energy development. Hoffman also traces the policy and political failures that have stalled renewable energy deployment ever since. “In hindsight, it is clear that the powerful recommendations in our study were largely ignored,” he writes. “We thereby missed a great opportunity to transform our society in a way that would have enabled us to avoid many of the traumatic geopolitical, economic, and environmental problems we faced in the ensuing years.” (h/t Karel Beckman)
