New Online Tool Tracks Corporate Carbon Disclosures

July 8, 2014
Reading time: 1 minute

An online tool released June 30 by Ceres and CookESG Research makes it easier to track carbon disclosures in private companies’ filings with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). So far, the tool covers the companies in the Russell 3000®, an index of the 3,000 largest U.S. companies, and goes back to 2009. “The tool scans filings, automatically identifies climate-related text, and sorts information into renewable energy, physical impacts, and other categories,” Ceres and CookESG state. The tool shows that only half of Russell 3000 firms had anything to say about climate in their 2014 filings, compared to just over one-third in 2009. “Robust climate-related data from companies is a critical need, but it’s still lacking,” said Ceres President Mindy Lubber.
