U.S. Renewable Generation Hits 14% of Total; Carbon Emissions Rise

Renewable energy pushed marginally above 14% of U.S. electricity generation in the first four months of 2014, according to the Energy Information Administration, a level of output the EIA hadn’t expected until 2014. Wind produces more than 5% of total generation, Bossong reports, and photovoltaic production increased 108.9% from 2013 to 2014. But fossil fuel production grew 5.17% in the first quarter compared to Q1/2013, and “as a consequence, carbon dioxide emissions from the consumption of fossil fuels rose by 5.48%.”
