‘Shrouded’ Wind Turbine Design Could Be Safer for Birds, Bats

California’s Altamont Pass Wind Resources Area is about to begin testing on a new wind turbine design that could protect birds and bats from spinning blades. “Ogin Inc. will replace 73 conventional turbines with 40 ‘shrouded’ turbines in an area notorious for collisions—about 4,300 birds killed each year,” SustainableBusiness.com reports. “Its impact on four raptor species will be closely observed—golden eagle, burrowing owl, American kestrel and red-tailed hawk.” If the design is safer, Ogin will supply another 300 turbines.
