Wind energy producers took the largest share of the output when Brazil’s electricity trading board, CCEE, awarded contracts for 968 megawatts of new electricity generation. In a country that relies on hydroelectric generation for more than 70% of its power, wind farm operators bid successfully for 551 MW of new production. Brazil, which had the world’s cheapest wind energy production in 2012, “is seeking to increase capacity and diversify its power sources as the worst drought in more than 40 years cuts output,” Bloomberg reports. A separate auction for photovoltaic plants larger than 5 MW is scheduled for October. (h/t to InsideClimate News)
