The new U.S. power plant regulation can be good news for Canadian producers, says Merran Smith, Director of Clean Energy Canada. “The president’s new plan means the U.S. will need more clean power,” Smith writes. “And we have it—in the form of reliable and near-zero-carbon hydroelectricity, available on demand, and other renewable energy resources in the quantities needed to power cities and whole economies. We also have expertise in a wide range of energy technologies and services that will prove vital in America’s transition, such as smart-grid and efficiency hardware and software.” But to take advantage of the clean energy boom beyond its southern border, Canada will have to “shift our energy export focus from molecules of petroleum to clean electrons, and supporting technologies and services.”
