70% of Americans Agree with Carbon Pollution Limits on Power Plants

Seven in 10 Americans agree with limiting carbon pollution from existing power plants, according to a Washington Post-ABC poll conducted before the release of the new EPA regulation. “Democrats and Republicans are in rare agreement on the issue,” the Post reports, with 57% of Republicans, 76% of independents, and 79% of Democrats supporting state-level emission controls. Among Tea Party supporters, 50% supported emission limits and 45% opposed them. “The cross-party agreement extends to a willingness to pay for such limits with higher energy bills,” Clement and Craighill write, with 51% of Republicans, 64% of independents, and 71% of Democrats willing to pay $20 per month more for electricity. “Americans living in coal-heavy states are supportive of limiting greenhouse gas emissions in the poll, even as their states will be forced to make bigger adjustments to meet the EPA’s new emissions targets.”
