Rising electricity prices are an issue in Ontario’s provincial election, but the shift to renewable energy is not to blame. “We have to cover costs of nuclear plant refurbishment, costs of new transmission and distribution infrastructure, costs of new peaking power plants coming into service, and yes, the introduction of newer sources such as solar energy,” writes John Gorman, President and CEO of the Canadian Solar Industries Association, in this Toronto Star op ed. An independent study showed that solar represents less than 4% of the average electricity bill, and will only rise to 6% by 2024, with much more solar generation on the grid.
