On May 14, solar entrepreneur Steve Wilke attended the Google annual meeting and urged the company to pull its funding from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). “Last year, I saw a myriad of pre-market indicators lining up for the solar industry in the state of Oklahoma,” Wilke told the meeting. “Last month, I saw that market destroyed,” following lobbying by ALEC. “Your firm is hundreds of millions of dollars deep in distributed energy, yet you continue to fund a group that is actively and successfully destroying renewable markets.” A Google official said the company would “continue to review and consider” the request, and CEO Larry Page commented that “we’ve heard this very clearly.”
