Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk’s first $5-billion “gigafactory” to build lithium-ion batteries is still on the drawing boards, but he’s already looking ahead to the next couple of hundred. With growing demand from conventional automakers, “there’s going to need to be lots of gigafactories,” he reportedly told the World Energy Innovation Forum in mid-May. “Just to supply auto demand, you need 200 gigafactories.” Tesla is still deciding whether to locate its first plant in Texas, Arizona, Nevada, or New Mexico.
