Insurer’s Class Actions Say Communities Should Have Foreseen Climate Impacts

Farmers Insurance has filed nine class action lawsuits against nearly 200 Illinois municipalities, claiming they should have foreseen and prepared for the impacts of severe rain and flooding. The company “is arguing that local governments should have known rising global temperatures would lead to heavier rains and did not do enough to fortify their sewers and stormwater drains,” Thomson Reuters reported. Environmental law experts said this is the first lawsuit of its kind, and it won’t be the last. (h/t Angus Rose)
